Scouse Steve’s birthday

Last night ended up over at Tort’s place for a last minute social. Organised because we both had no prior arranged engagements with any one and, you know, from time to time we feel compulsed to spending some nice time with each other. 'Brokeback Mountain' and a bitch about our lovers was on the cards. T was sick of J’s over attentive, eyegazing, caressing style, 'partner reinforcement' and I’m sick of Sarah’s needy needy mumsy vibe and confrontational attitude. Even though she'd dumped him last week and he'd been round hers and picked his stuff up she still 'ended up' with him last Sunday afternoon after she'd went down there for Dan's birthday drink on the beach and came down too early and met Jay there and 'ended up' back at hers with him. 'Oh, he's so sweet' she was saying. 'He's hard to resist... he does nothing wrong it's just I don't want to be with him in that girlf boyf mode. I want to talk to him but he has nothing to say'. Look mate; you either are going out with him or you aren't! Naturally she talks easily and openly with me all night long.

Watching 'Brokeback...' we’re both recognising how Jack Twist and Innis have so ‘got the connection’ and we both so thrilled at the way, despite the social restrictiveness of their culture, that they ‘just had to get it together’ no matter what the circumstances; how ‘they couldn’t stop themselves’, 'were driven', how ‘they fucking had it going big time’; ‘the spark’ shone through the hate the culture had for bisexual people. Ah, I thought, the elusive ‘spark’ that T is always looking for. I tell you I had it for her that night. Particularly as she was showing me some of her bendy pilates exercises. For some reason! She just flexes and flirts so blatently with me all the time. She knows I love it though and probably enjoys the power she has over me? I'm going to have another crack at her at 'The Big Chill'. You can be sure of that. We chatted away merrily all night, easily and in a relaxed manner. I loved it. So relaxed. So easy. She’s coming to the ‘stop the war’ gig on Saturday at Dane John Gardens in Canterbury. I’d love to make a move on her then but I don’t want to jeopardise the position I have as one of her ‘girlfriends’. I could blow what I have built up laboriously over the months so easily. It can be so frustrating. Perhaps that is what she loves about me. Teasing me. Knowing how I feel about her. It certainly keeps a spark going between us that's for sure. But. Do I really want to make a move on her though? Or am I just hankering after times that I thought I had but never really did? Or times that I think I could have but never will? Maybe I'm looking for 'the spark', thinking I can find it with her but I'm only deceiving myself really.

Last weekend went relatively incident free. I was bored shitless most of the time and behaving myself. That is; I wa sober. At Simon and Anna's BBQ for Scouse Steve’s birthday, which he actually celebrated in London the week before, things were remarkably subdued. We were there, eating and drinking, having a laugh, settling in. He wasn’t even there till later. Entering like he was some fucking pop star with his gorgeous girlfriend, Bean. I left early because I had a party to organise the next day. Food was good though; salmon parcels baked by Martin and Juliet standing out in particular. As was sitting round the firer having a chat with everyone. The night or rather morning only marked by a pissed text from Juliet at 7.30am in the morning asking for ‘more’. I awoke at 8.30am, promptly texted her back, but got no reply. Later, they said they’d fallen asleep just after they sent the text. Bless.

Saturday was Dee’s band, The Escalators, at the Horsebridge in Whitstable. Part of Bear’s Natural high evenings. Only I didn’t get to actually see the band. Paid the fiver to get in; yes. Sat on the balcony smoking a cigarette; yes. Chatted with the lovely Helene, who told me her boyf, Jules, had up and left her the other morning. Left a note and he was gone. Poor thing was so upset. See the band? No! I’d got a call off Nick Dent to say he couldn’t get the rig, we’d set up earlier at his house ready for the party later, to work. I had to abandon the gig and go up to the venue to sort the rig out. MDM had plugged the amp input into the wrong socket. Ah, well. I was here now. Pointless going back. Emily, later, said it was boiling in there anyway and she couldn’t stand even a minute of it. Other people said the band were shit. I thought they were a young, new band still finding their feet. Inexperienced. I only went because Dee herself invited me when I was at the 'Muddy Shovels' gig at the Labour Club the other week and wanted to support them.

We played house music all night. Me, Mike and Mark. It was great. For us anyway. Although Si played some of his old punk 7 inches for an hour or so. Which was nice. It was best in the morning when all the piss heads and coke heads had gone home and there was just us there arsing around the fire drinking and smoking. The sun came out. Justin tried, and suceeded, to get into a little plastic child’s car. I chatted to Jenny for ages. I really enjoy her company. She’s ‘got so much loving’ in her. Scares me a bit if I’m honest. If I 'go there' am I going to be hurt? I hope so. I can handle it anyway. That date with her at the end of the month is still on anyway. So, we'll see what happens then.

Ended up staying at Nick's till well gone 10am. Ended up going down the beach with the gang after a stint at J&E’s. Sitting in the sun. When the bar opened we drank some more and smoked sneaky spliffs on the beach laughing all the way. To oblivion. It was a fantastic day...

Fergus The Forager

Been exchanging a series of emails with T. Been getting on a lot better lately. See, it’s alright having ‘a new boyfriend’ but as she says herself ‘you got to have something to talk about after’. Unfortunately he gets, or rather got the sex, whereas I just get, or rather am pleased to get, the talking, supporting, listening friend role in this entire little scenario. Do I get the better deal? I think so. I do so. Now he's no longer on the scene. She was very keen to know if I was going to the 'big chill' this year. I told her I am. She said that as the sale on her 1st house was going through (more on this later) she’d have her garden to grow plants and funny shaped vegetable in and not have to bother about having a love life. Bless. She’s still in recovery after dumping Jay. He gave her a real hard time when he came to pick up his possessions from her flat on Sunday. She was supposed to be meeting me down the beach for a drink but ended up having a 6 hour hard time off J who, she says, gave her a blow by blow account of why her personality needed assassinating.

Spent some pleasant time with Aurelia and Jenny the other night sharing some nice food. At the end of the month Jenny and I have arranged to spend the day with John and Jayne mucking around on their boat and having a picnic. Or so I thought. She’s already talking about ‘having some mushrooms’ and ‘painting me all day’ as well as staying the night at J&J’s. ‘There’s nothing wrong with lying naked in bed together and seeing what happens; is there?’ she says. I can see the Julia thing happening all over again here. Sleeping with long term female friends is not to be recommended I would say. Especially if you’re in a drugged up state of mind.

Anyway, with Aurelia I told her I was still seeing Sarah on and off occasionally. She was pretty cool about it and I got the commission for her brother’s website off her. He’s a guy called Fergus the Forager and does just that; forage woods for foodstuffs. He wanted his website changed and up by Tuesday night gone. This was because of his imminent TV appearance on the ‘The Urban Chef’ (BBC2 6.30, weekdays). This is a show about a London chef who is trying to source all his produce from within London for the restaurant he is about to open; the snag? Everywhere has to be reachable by the tube network. He decides to forage in the woods for food. He ‘researches’ on the internet and finds Fergus. Despite his website being crap he got the call, was dumped in some woods with a film crew and told to ‘forage’. He actually found fuck all but that’s by the way but what he did fine he made wild mushroom bruschetta from it. It spurred him on. He wants his website sorted out. Its www.wildmanwildfood.com. Only we can’t get access to it. The guy who looks after it now can't remember the username or password. Doh! I suggested we just scrap that and go for www.fergustheforager.com. He said the picture on the front page makes him look like a looney and has a big bit of 'snot' right over his face. Still waiting back for that one.

Sarah has 2 small children and has just come out of the other side of a messy custody/access court battle. She lives in a battered women’s refuge in Sittingbourne. We’ve been seeing each other for nearly 6 months. On and off. Sometimes only once a fortnight. On Sunday she has arranged a day out with me ‘and the girls’. It’ll be the first time I’ve met them; and I’m dead nervous. I've got a barbeque to go to tonight and am providing a rig and DJing at a house party on Saturday. The BBQ is for Scouse Steve. The host wants us all to wear 'scouse wigs and 'taches'. Must not have a late one. Repeat, must not have a late one.

TV Cabbage Pt 1

Watched too much TV. Damn that generic satellite TV record and playback box with a + at the end of it. Only means one inevitable, relentless possibility; I can go out more and watch more TV. Whenever I want to. If only work didn’t get in the way and the bills didn’t need paying? Today; ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘Lost’, ‘House’, ‘Rescue Me’, ‘Last Man Standing’, that CGI thing on the sperm whales, ‘IQ’, ‘Coach Trip’. 3 episodes of ‘Desperate…’ still stacked up. Oh, dear! Where will I find the time? BB 7 hours a week minimum plus the LB, BM and Big Brain versions when I can. Not include the ‘3 film’ deal I have with one particular satellite film channels online DVD rental arm. Don’t do it. It’ll kill you! Recent top films; ‘The Beat That My Heart Skipped’, ‘Brokeback Mountain’, ‘A Bittersweet Life’, ‘The Ordeal (aka Calvaire)’, ‘King's Game (Kongekabale)’ and ‘Ivan’s XTC’, to name drop but a few. Besides, its proof, to me, that intelligent and bloody great film can still be made. Must hunt for more…

I’m finding myself coming home after work and just watch TV instead of catching up on my paperwork. “Hi, my names TVcabbage and I’m an addict”. Maybe this is turning into a TV addict’s blog?

Texted Aurelia

Texted Aurelia to see if she was still up for a drink and a film. She didn’t even bother texting back for 2 and a half hours and by that time the bloody film was long gone. In fact it wasn’t long gone at all. It had been cancelled. But I didn’t mention that to her. She made some excuse about having a cold. I didn’t believe it for a minute. She then sent me a series of bizarre texts that finally convinced me she is an absolute, as MDM would say, ‘nutter’.

redundancy pt 1

Well, finally got my redundancy notice through. Project I work for with KAES ends 31st August 2006. In 3 months time. £1,116 redundancy money plus four weeks wages. On the case for new and gainful employment. Looks like this is turning into a job seekers blog? Watch this space...

He feels most perturbed

Feels like I'm being stalked by Aurelia. I'm getting half a dozen texts a day from her and she’s calling too. I know I'm not really. Oh, its all nice things like ‘wanna come to Jenny’s for tea’ but it’s making me feel under pressure a bit and I don’t like that. So, to alleviate the pressure, I’ve invited her to the film being put on by the Stop the War mob at Dukes this Thursday; The Revolution Will Not Be Televised. I only go down to see Nick anyway, but a few beers with A might not be so bad. She’s said she likes me and I might as well see if we get on. One worry though; she used to go out with my lodger, Dave, 20 years ago.

Me, Rosie and Tort met for lunch Bank Holiday Monday. Mistakenly we went to Dukes in Whitstable. This is the first time we three have got together for lunch for over two years. ‘Only Dan is missing now’ I say. ‘Where is he?’ says Rosie. Jokingly. Just like at the Wall for Bens Ego the night before I have one either side of me but this time they are both talking to each other. It’s a bit stilted but at least they are around the same table. T was recovering from her dumping session the night before and was a bit fragile. Her meal was awful. They’d used pickled artichokes instead of fresh ones. When we complained they said ‘well, you’ve eaten more than half of it’. Tossers. We won’t be eating there again in a hurry.

So, walked into the pub and Ben is sitting there. He waves and goes; ‘déjà vu’. Bens Ego are playing in the pub this afternoon. Déjà vu indeed. After the gig and lunch T decides to get the bus. It doesn’t arrive. Us lot arrange for a drink down the Fountain. I said I was going to get my car and meet them there. T is still at the bus stop when I leave. It’s raining. I fetch my car and pull up at the bus stop. ‘Come on’, I say ‘I’ll give you a lift home’. It feels just like old times. Weirdly. I mustn’t get sucked back into ‘looking after’ her again. The next day I just send her my usual text joke and leave the ball in her court. Back to the past here; I drop her off. She invites me in. we smoke and drink tea. She does all the talking. Working through her split with Jay. Analysing her reasons and motivation, minimising the hurt. She laid it out on the line. I admired her honesty. She did exactly the same to me. Said the spark wasn’t there. Laid it out straight. J cut his losses and agreed to fall on his sword. He picks his stuff up on Tuesday. Which may explain why T hasn’t contacted me. Think I’ll leave it alone for a day or two.

What I need to do today is ring Marc up and see how things are going with him and Carole. This is going to be a real tough week for my good old friend and he’s going to need all the support I can give him.

He’s just been round mine tonight, with Mike for a mix and a curry. He ain’t seen Carole. She just rang him tonight, Wednesday, saying she was back in the UK. He knew she was actually back on Sunday night. He feels most perturbed.
